Biography

Dr. Alexey Gurevich is a junior professor of bioinformatics at the Helmholtz Institute for Pharmaceutical Research Saarland (HIPS) and Saarland University. He graduated with honors in computer science (BSc in 2010 from St. Petersburg State Polytechnic University and MSc in 2021 from St. Petersburg Academic University) and started working in algorithmic bioinformatics in St. Petersburg under the supervision of Prof. Pavel Pevzner. In 2018, Alexey received a PhD degree from St. Petersburg State University for his work on computational methods for handling noisy omics data. Alexey contributed to the state-of-the-art SPAdes and QUAST toolkits for (meta)genome assembly and postprocessing and co-authored multiple methods for high-throughput natural product discovery from metabolomics and metagenomics data. He is also a member of the Critical Assessment of Metagenome Interpretation (CAMI) initiative aimed at providing researchers with guidelines and best practices in metagenomic data analysis. Since July 2022, Alexey leads the Human-Microbe Systems Bioinformatics group at HIPS.
