Biography

Dr. Matthias Wielscher is a Senior Research Associate at the Medical University of Vienna, specializing in bacteriophages, metagenomics and genetic epidemiology in general. Dr. Wielscher’s research focuses on the composition of the skin microbiome, particularly the phageome, and its impact on skin health and disease. He has extensive experience in applying next-generation sequencing techniques to distinguish between bacterial and phage genomes, contributing to a deeper understanding of their interactions and implications in conditions such as atopic dermatitis.

Dr. Wielscher has previously held positions at Imperial College London and Genomics England, where he was involved in high-profile projects like the 100k Genomes Project. His work in genetic epidemiology and data integration has been widely recognized, and he has authored numerous publications in top-tier journals.
